This study was undertaken with the aim of achieving a quantitative overview of historical changes in vocabulary in Japanese, in particular, the process of popularization of Meiji scholarly terms that appear in the basic vocabulary lists of present-day Japanese or in the vocabulary of various media (magazines, newspapers, television) from Meiji to the present. It is concluded that some Meiji scholarly terms have deeply penetrated into the base of present-day Japanese, as such terms form part of basic vocabulary lists and of higher-frequency ranks of vocabulary lists of present-day media.
