Polysemy is defined as the phenomenon in which two or more semantically related meanings are associated with the same word or form. Since the degree of granularity with which a word is treated as polysemous depends on the purpose of the research or the standpoint of the researcher, various approaches have been devised to recognize several meanings of polysemy, from both a linguistic and a psycho-experimental perspective. The linguistic methods developed in previous studies are reviewed for identifying polysemy in a word, classifying them into lexical, grammatical, and logical tests, and examining the extent of their effectiveness. We analyzed the mechanisms of each test and discussed their features in terms of the degree of granularity of meaning.
