Two studies were conducted to examine: 1) how native Spanish speakers who were unfamiliar with Japanese, heard spoken Japanese and transcribed the words using the Spanish alphabet; and 2) how the same speakers read out each word transcribed with the phonetic notation derived from the first study, identifying the notation that was most likely to be read the way it sounded in Japanese.\nThe main characteristics of the phonetic notation proposed here are detailed below.\n(a) The combination of consonants [k, g, h, z] and vowels [a, i, u, e, o] should be notated as \"ca, qui, cu, que, co, ga,
