| 内容記述 | 近年,英語に持ち込まれた日本語語彙の数は激増しているが,ヨーロッパ諸言語の比ではない。The Oxford English Dictionary (OEDと略す)に限って述べるならば,初版では日本語語彙は派生語を含め60余語に過ぎなかった。その後の日本経済の発展もあり,第2版(1989)では約400語に達した。英語における語彙の歴史はOEDにその研究成果が集約されている。この辞書にはその語が文献のうえで最初に使われた年(初出年)が示されている。本調査はOEDに収録されている語を中心に約900の日本語語彙の初出年を確定するのが目的である。これまでOEDの記述に遺漏はないと思われてきたが,日本語語源の語彙に関する限りかなりの不備があることが筆者の研究で明らかになった。第2版以降の追加(Additions)分も加えかつJapanの派生語も含めると, OEDには約550語が収録されている。筆者の調査で,このうち約260語について初出年を早めることができた。この初出年書き換えにより,日英(日欧)の文化交流の歴史も同時に書き換えることができたと筆者は信じている。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | The purpose of this research is to ascertain and fix the year of the earliest appearance of Japanese loanwords in English literature (which includes the letters and logbooks written by Adams, Saris and Cocks), with special reference to those in the The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and its Additions Series. The first edition of the OED contains only 60 Japanese words, such as bonze, moxa, and shogun, while the second edition published in 1989 has approximately 400 Japanese loanwords. The substantial increase is caused by the economic development of Japan and the worldwide popularity of things Japanese. This research antedates about 260 Japanese words and presents a list of 905 loanwords as a substitute for the old ones in the second edition of the OED and is sure to contribute to the historical understanding of cultural exchanges between western countries and Japan. For example, the word Ryukyu, registered in the OED as appearing in 1808, is found in a document issued in 1588. This fact suggests the intercultural relationships between Ryukyu and Europe as early as the latter half of the 16th century. | |||||
