Demonstrative pronouns in Japanese include the following four groups: (i) kore, sore and are (mainly for things); (ii) koitsu, soitsu and aitsu (for humans or things) ; (iii) koko, soko and asoko (mainly for places) ; and (iv) kochira, sochira and achira (mainly for directions). These groups can be cross-classified into the following 2 sets of series: (i) ko-, so- and a-series, based on the word-initial syllables, and (ii) -re, -itsu, -ko and -chira series, based on the word-final segments. In contrast to previous studies which only looked at the differences among the series of the first set, the present work examines the differences among the series of the second set in movie scripts. We elucidated the primary referents for each series and also the conditions that affect them. This research also contributes towards a categorical classification of nouns.
