First, the significance of the study, which focuses on the lexical meaning of the verb aru (exist), is outlined. Second, the problems observed in the descriptions of aru in current Japanese dictionaries are highlighted. These problems are observed as primarily pertaining to the classification of the verb's meanings and its selection of metalanguages. Third, this study provides 20 different meanings of the verb aru. Moreover, it clarifies the process of semantic extension of these meanings using metaphor, synecdoche, and metonymy.
