We investigated 40 advanced learners in the UK, Germany, France, and Spain, and 20 Japanese native speakers using the 'think-aloud' method.\nThe results show some differences in interpretation. The European learners regard the use of symbols and emoticons as either 'not reliable' or 'cute'. Japanese native speakers treat these as meaningful information.
