Prior research in the fields of Japanese language and Japanese language education suggests that the difference in usage between the two response tokens is merely one of politeness. However, analysis by the author of the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ), a collection of Japanese conversations, indicates that recipients may also distinguish the use of un and hai based on a standard other than politeness.
