The longitudinal observation and interviews were conducted over a period of 1 year and 3 months after she began working in Japan. The data were qualitatively analyzed based on SCAT (Steps for Coding and Theorization). Upon starting work, she was confronted with a high dropout rate among her students. Despite her attempts to reduce this, the dropout rate rose. In this critical situation, she consulted with other trainers and with her students. Through such consultation, she came to realize others' values, which led her to reflect upon her own teaching practices. Subsequently, her teaching values appeared to diversify. It is through this process of diversification that she became aware of the ways in which her former teaching had been inappropriate. Thus, the main factor leading to diversification of her teaching values appears to have been the self-reflection following interactions with others, which had been prompted by the critical situation itself.
