Strictly speaking, this database is a product not of this sub-project but of an earlier project. However, since the current sub-project owes much to this database, I describe it in this paper. Second, I consider the dictionary of Japanese fundamental vocabulary, which analyzes 2,000 basic words of Japanese. We have already analyzed the meanings of 1,000 fundamental words and presented the results in two reports. During the current fiscal year we plan to issue a third report. Finally, I report on a study of the degree to which elementary- and secondary-school children understand the meanings of fundamental vocabulary items.
