This question is answered by investigating documents written by Japanese scholars of Dutch studies in the Edo period, who, when translating Dutch documents into Japanese, made reference to the word-building patterns of classical Chinese and created the new word structure with three Chinese characters by enlarging the usage of the one-character base that appeared at the end of a word. The three-Chinese-character word pattern thus created in the Edo period was handed down to the Meiji period, and with an increase of new one-character bases, it has become a notable feature characterizing the Japanese-made Chinese words in present-day Japanese., application/pdf}, pages = {1--25}, title = {蘭学資料の三字漢語についての考察 : 明治期の三字漢語とのつながりを求めて}, year = {2011} }
