Nineteen Japanese learners from non-Kanji cultures participated in this research. They read restaurant reviews on a website while simultaneously reporting their reading process. The results showed the following: (i) Japanese learners tend to skim and scan the text in order to get information that reflects an evaluation of the restaurant, especially negative expressions. (ii) Japanese learners tend to acquire information from an adversative conjunction (e.g., kedo [though], demo [but]). (iii) Japanese learners tend to skim and scan the text and skip over useless information. (iv) Many Japanese learners, including advanced learners, have difficulty fully understanding important expressions that reflect an evaluation of the restaurant (e.g., CP [Cost Performance]). (v) Many Japanese learners, including advanced ones, have difficulty understanding expressions that can carry negative connotations (e.g., doo nan deshoo ka? [How is it that?]).
