First, simplex nouns exhibit a two-way tonal contrast between 'falling' and 'flat' word-tones, as reported in the previous literature. Second, the tonal pattern of most of the compounds follows the so-called 'compound rule', whereby the pattern of the whole compound is determined by the tonal class of its first component. Third, a regular correspondence is found between the tonal classes of Miyara and the tonal classes (A, B, C) reconstructed for proto-Ryukyuan, i.e., words belonging to the falling word-tone correspond to class A, whereas words belonging to the flat word-tone correspond to B and C classes.
