Our survey found that the use of the -tte sentence-final quotation form was the most common type of quotation form in both types of conversations. Additionally, the sentence-final quotation form in -datte? (with a question mark) was common in conversations in novels, but very few instances of -datte pronounced in a rising intonation were found in real-life conversations. A closer examination of this difference in the tendencies of quotation use by register showed that the characteristics of the conversations affected the tendency to use the -tte sentence-final quotation form. This is because real-life conversations consist of interactions between independent speakers, while conversations in novels reflect the author's intention and need to consider not only the characters but also the readers.
