The analysis is based on data from naturally occurring conversations by eight elderly Taiwanese speakers of Japanese in Hualien prefecture. The results show that in Taiwan Japanese, both -nai (Standard Japanese form) and -n (Western Japanese dialectal form) are used. -Nai is used with all vowel stem verbs, whereas -n is used only with consonant stem verbs. Individual differences do exist, and the use of -n also differs in respect to the conjugation type of the consonant stem verbs. It may be inferred from the variation between informants that -n has been disappearing in the following order: vowel stem verbs → consonant stem verbs not ending with -r → consonant stem verbs ending with -r. It was also observed that some informants used -n in the domain where Japanese was used as a lingua franca, and shifted to -nai when speaking with the interviewer, a native speaker of Japanese. This usage leads to the conclusion that -n is regarded as an informal form, which may be due to its inherent nature as a dialectal form. However, as informants with lower Japanese proficiency did not use this type of style shift, there is an interrelation between style-shifting and language proficiency. The system which developed in Taiwan Japanese for negation provides an interesting example of linguistic change that may occur when certain dialectal forms are transplanted to a different linguistic region., application/pdf}, pages = {5--25}, title = {台湾残存日本語にみられる否定辞「ナイ」と「ン」 : 花蓮県をフィールドに}, volume = {20}, year = {2006}, yomi = {カン, ゲッシン} }
