The 'poetic function' can be seen as a kind of automatous 'generator' of words, which projects onto the syntagmatic axis, phonological and/or semantic associates from the words on the paradigmatic axis. There is no difference between 'poetic language' and 'pathological language,' insofar as they are both generated by the same language function. Jakobson argued about the similarities between them, but as to the differences, he didn't. What distinguishes the two kinds of language seems to lie in the quality of the verbal context, and the problems of context quality show up most prominently in wordplay. When seen from Gricean point of view, wordplay turns out to be a GENUINE deviation from his 'Cooperative Principle' and the 'maxims' under it, in that it is not just APPARENT deviation which give rise to 'conversational implicature.' Wordplay, therefore, cannot be interpreted in terms of 'conversational implicature' nor as an example of 'rhetoric,' such as irony or metaphor; there is a sense in which it is a NON-COMMUNICATIVE way of communication. It causes words to deviate from the context present in many different ways. This, in turn, has the effect of focusing on the context itself and impresses it on the addressee more strongly than usual.
