I claim that the conjunction kuseni lexically implies the speaker's low evaluation toward the states of affairs involved, and that the speaker believes his/her low evaluation can be attributed to a particular person or object. Thus, while the two conjunctions seem to express similar semantics (such as blame, criticism, or denouncement), the readings are lexical in the case of kuseni, and contextual in the case of noni. The above analysis of kuseni raises a very interesting theoretical question, because it inevitably assumes an owner of evaluation. When the conjunction is used in a dialogue, the owner of evaluation is clearly the speaker. When the conjunction is used in fiction, however, the owner could be the narrator, the antagonist, or the author. The conjunction kuseni is found in the narrator's narrative prose, although the occurrence rate is not very high. This fact seems to suggest that the author's evaluation can be expressed subtly but linguistically through the narrator's voice in literature, and if this analysis is right, this convention seems to be a very interesting characteristic of Japanese narrative., application/pdf}, pages = {34--55}, title = {接続助詞の語彙的な意味と文脈的な意味 : クセニとノニの記述と分析を巡って}, volume = {10}, year = {2001}, yomi = {ワタナベ, マナブ} }
