However, in this paper I demonstrate that the adverbial 'hodo' (-phrase) can also be interpreted as an adnominal quantifier, adverb of quantity of motion, or adverb of frequency, and conclude that the degree modifier usage is merely one of a multiple of usage of the 'hodo'-phrase. Based on a comparison of the behavior of 'hodo'-phrase with other stereotypical adverbs of degree, I show that it deviates from stereotypical adverbs of degree both syntactic ally and semantic ally. I assume that the 'hodo'-phrase has numeral-quantifier-like properties because it can behave as a formal noun as well as the argument structure of its predicate verbs. This assumption makes it possible to more adequately explain why 'hodo'-phrase can have a multiple of readings. The 'adnominal quantifier usage' can be deduced from its function as an NP, when the antecedent NP (subject or direct object) required by the 'hodo'-phrase is relevant to the argument structure of the matrix verb; the 'adverb of motion quantity usage' is related to its function as a VP quantifier that quantifies both the time and the path pertaining to an atelic motion; the 'adverb of frequency usage' can be derived from its function as an event quantifier for counting multiple events. In this article, I conclude that the question of what the 'hodo'-phrase modifies relates to its adverbial properties, the properties of the predicate, plurality of the referent noun, and event telicity.
