Although both sae and desae are focus particles of the meaning of 'even', their semantic focuses, or targets of contrast, differ. The focus of desae is limited to the preceding NP (N(oun phrase)-level contrast), with de functioning as an explicit marker of focus. On the other hand, the focus of sae is a larger phrase containing it, whose head is predicate (P(redicate phrase)-level contrast). These hypotheses explain the following examples adequately. (a) Boku [*sae/desae] tsukareta noda kara, kimi wa donnani tsukareta koto daroo. (Even I am exhausted. How tired you must be !) (b) Kanojo no kao niwa namida [sae/* desae] ukandeiru. (Even tears are gathering on her face.) In (a), the speaker compares two noun phrases 'boku (I)' and 'kimi (you)' and says, "Even 'boku (I)' satisfies x of 'x ga tsukareta (x is tired ).' Therefore, it is natural that 'kimi (you)' also satisfies x." This is a case of N-level contrast. In such a case sae is not used and desae is used. In (b), we cannot imagine 'x ga ukandeiru (x are gathering )' for x other than 'namida (tears)'. The total phrase 'namida sae ukandeiru (tears are gathering)' expresses extremity of feeling, compared with other possible degrees of feeling. This is a case of P-level contrast. In this case sae is used and desae is not used. In some sentences where the interpretations of P-level contrast and N-level contrast are both possible, both sae and desae can be used., application/pdf}, pages = {7--31}, title = {サエとデサエ}, volume = {6}, year = {1999}, yomi = {キクチ, ヤスト} }
