However, in most of the conventional studies tense in subordinate clauses is analyzed interpretively, i.e., investigating already established sentences, they judge which one is absolute tense or which one is relative. There are few studies as to in which case the tense in subordinate clause can be absolute or relative. In view of these problems, in this paper we investigate relative clauses and noun sentential complementations to describe in which case the tense can be absolute or relative. In the process of investigation we see two intriguing asymmetries. The one is asymmetry of tense phenomena between relative clauses and noun sentential complementations, and the other is asymmetry of viewpoint-switching between the case of "subordinate clause: ru-form/matrix clause: ru-form" and the case of "subordinate clause: ta-form/matrix clause: ta-form", both of which are what matters in noun sentential complementations. The former asymmetry is deduced from the difference of nature between relative clauses and noun sentential complementations. The latter asymmetry is inferred from agreement/disagreement between the linear order of the complex sentence and the temporal order of events., application/pdf}, pages = {47--66}, title = {連体修飾節のテンスについて}, volume = {3}, year = {1998}, yomi = {イワサキ, タカシ} }
