By identifying usage trends and characteristics, the study aims to determine basic katakana words essential for learners. While the target katakana words mainly consisted of loanwords, onomatopoeic expressions, which are often written in katakana, were also included. \nThe analysis reveals a strong bias in boys' compositions toward sports-related vocabulary, particularly soccer. In contrast, many girls mentioned ~ya stores, such as \"cake shop\" and \"ice cream shop,\" when discussing their future dreams. \"Television\" was frequently used from fourth to sixth grade but disappeared in sixth-grade compositions. Differences in dream narratives were also observed: boys often admired famous athletes, while girls focused on aspirations related to family members. Onomatopoeias occurred approximately twice as often in girls' compositions compared to boys', with distinct usage trends across grade levels.
