Using essay data and writing process records from the Written Corpus of Learner Japanese (W-CoLeJa), two key findings emerged. First, the rates of kanji used among CJL remained consistently high from the early stages of learning, stabilizing over time. However, thematic differences were observed, with lower rates in narrative essays and higher rates in expository and editorial essays. In contrast, non-kanji-background learners like VJL showed a gradual increase in the use of kanji usage, following a different trajectory from CJL. Second, an analysis of kanji input methods by CJL revealed a combination of Japanese romaji input and Chinese pinyin input. Complex trial-and-error patterns were particularly evident when entering proper nouns. When unfamiliar with Japanese pronunciation of kanji, learners often relied on the Chinese readings.
