Place-name evidence points to it having been once rather widespread in Shikoku, and this paper reports evidence that the word mami was used until the mid-20th century in a mountainous region of Tosa-cho, Kochi Prefecture, probably sustained by the presence of multiple place names containing mamiana 'badger sett' in the area.
