Focusing on the OA of journal articles written in Japanese, this paper examines the current situation and discusses the actions required of authors. This paper comprises seven sections. Section 1 illustrates the background of the OA initiative, Section 2 introduces the related literature, Section 3 presents the outline of the immediate OA policy, Section 4 discusses the keywords and key concepts, Section 5 presents a check-list for authors, Section 6 discusses several problems that may occur in the near future, and Section 7 summarizes the discussion and lists the issues that must be further
