Previous studies have indicated a clear contrast between the three accent types for simplex and compound nouns in Kuroshima. However, despite conducting several investigations using the same methodology as previous studies, we could not identify the contrast between types a and b for simplex nouns, although we successfully identified three contrasting types for compound nouns. Recent studies on Yaeyama Ryukyuan have revealed a direction of diachronic change where the merger of accent types begins with simplex nouns and then extends to compound nouns. It is plausible that Kuroshima also changed this direction. This study aims to assess whether the three accent types contrast in simplex nouns in Kuroshima through a quantitative analysis of utterances by two speakers. The results revealed that very few simplex nouns manifested as Type A, and even these might freely vary between Types A and B. The results of this study indicate that diachronic changes aligned with the observed direction in Yaeyama Ryukyuan are similarly discernible in Kuroshima.
