However, since the latter half of the 1980s language issues contributing to social topics have gradually become subjects of debate. This debate has included arguments criticizing the ideology inherent to Japanese-language literacy, that is, literacy and Japanese-language education that has seen literacy from a uniform point of view as something to be expected in school education. This study reexamines Japanese-language literacy and reconsiders support for Japanese language learning. To that end, this study selects and reconsiders three prior studies from the existing research on literacy in Japan. It also summarizes and critiques the research findings.
