The results of the analysis may be summarized as follows: (1) Language transfer is most significant in beginners; (2) Differences in the use of KO-SO-A demonstratives between Korean and Chinese learners diminish, and almost vanish, as the level gets higher; (3) In Korean learners, great differences were observed between learners at different levels of Japanese proficiency. In Chinese learners, however, there was almost no difference. (4) Both Korean and Chinese learners are influenced by the contrastive use of SO and A demonstratives, i.e. by rules in Japanese; (5) Learners of Japanese (especially Koreans) are influenced both by rules in Japanese and in their native language.
