 note = {関西大学 大学院生, Graduate Student, Kansai University, 語の意味変化の方向性の一つに，空間的意味から時間的意味へというものがある。これに対して「端境」は，近代では時間的意味で用いられるも，現代では空間的意味での使用が見られる。これが時間的意味から空間的意味への変化に当たるのかどうかについて，類義語の「端境期」と関連付けながら，新聞や議会会議録に見られる用例を分析した。その結果，次のことが明らかになった。
（1） 近代の「端境」は時間的意味を表すことが多かったが，使用され始めてすぐに類義語である「端境期」に勢力を奪われ，ほとんど使用されなくなる。
（2） 近代と現代では「端境」の使用される位相が異なる。
以上を踏まえると，現代で用いられる空間的意味を表す「端境」は，近代で用いられた時間的意味の「端境」とは異なり，「端境期」から派生した別語であると捉える方が妥当であると考えられる。よって，「端境」は時間的意味から空間的意味への意味変化の事例とはいいがたい。, This paper examines the possibility of semantic change from a temporal to a spatial meaning. While changes from a spatial to a temporal meaning are common, the word hazakai seems to be a rare example of the opposite. In order to determine whether this is true, examples of hazakai and hazakaiki (a synonym of hazakai) were investigated in databases of newspapers and proceedings. The results showed that, in most cases, hazakai was used with a temporal meaning in the Near-Modern era; examples of hazakai gradually decreased in frequency as usage of hazakaiki increased. Furthermore, hazakai is used in a different register in the Modern era than it was in the Near-Modern era. Based on these analyses, the hazakai from the Near-Modern era and the hazakai of the Modern era are actually different words with the same form.
