In a previous paper, we analyzed the contributions themselves as a type of metacommunication behavior. In this paper, we analyze the relations between utterances and their interpersonal effects, from the viewpoint of functions of utterances and the directions of the effects (that is, positive or negative). In such functions as ‘action-request', ‘action-command', ‘assessment-statement' and ‘judgment-statement', no trend is found in the directions of the effects. On the other hand, in such functions as ‘action-recommendation', ‘greeting', ‘thanks', ‘apology' (and ‘impression-statement') , there is a strong tendency towards positive effects, although there are several cases of negative effects.
