One opinion views this rule as an active rule and therefore very valuable one. The objective of this paper is to point out some theoretical flaws in that opinion and to examine the related problems. Firstly， I consider that the conversion pattern mentioned above would be sufficiently productive were the rule simply called “active”. Secondly, I propose a good deal of sociolinguistic data to examine how the said rule is observed in the case of nouns that have long since been converted from simple-verbs. I also make a tentative analysis of the factors that seem to have brought about the actual state of variety. The data was obtained from “A Dictionary of Tone-accent on Words in the Tokyo Dialect.
