TAKEDA also proposed that the trichotomy found in the indefinite noun - phrases could be applied to definite noun-phrases as well, if only an appropriate definition of “definiteness” be given. Based on this theory, Donnellan's referential definite noun-phrases can be reclassified as specific definite noun-phrases. On the other hand, a part of Donnellan's attributive definite noun-phrases can be reclassified as non-specific definite noun-phrases, and the remaining part as descriptive definite noun-phrases. Making use of TAKEDA's classification as the framework for a comparative study, we investigated the categories of each group of noun-phrases in Japanese and Indonesian.
