The study was conducted in Tokyo, Akita Prefecture, and Nara Prefecture and had the following features. 1. This study investigated the acquisition rate for each Chinese character included in the Zyôyô Kanzi. 2. For each Chinese character, which was designated for acquisition in elementary school, we surveyed children in school years from 5 years preceding to 5 years after the school year designated for acquisition of the respective character. 3. We also surveyed how many of the 1,945 Zyôyô Kanzi each school child had acquired. This book contains data/statistical tables for the results obtained in the above surveys, a table of the school children's responses, and the results of the analysis of these data. The results of preliminary surveys which were conducted in preparation for the present study and the actual procedures used in these preliminary and the present studies are explained in detail. With this survey we were able to determine the acquisition rate for each Chinese character and the approximate number of characters acquired by the children. MURAISI Syôzô, ÔKUBO Ai, SIMAMURA Naomi, and MORO Yûzi directed this research.
