The primary assumption behind this work is that Thai speakers misunderstand the apologetic expressions used by the Japanese, and that differences in conceptualization employed in the two languages will lead to a better knowledge of the causes of these misunderstandings. Based on a written survey, the author shows the extent to which Thai people understand the apologetic expressions employed by the Japanese. The extent to which Grice's Cooperative Principle can explain the strategies of apology used by the Thai and Japanese is also examined.
