(e.g. to the student who submits a report one day after a deadline):tyan-to kinoo-no uchi-ni repooto-o dasi-te-kudasi-yo (low) .(literal translation:Please submit your report by yesterday as I told you.)Taking this phenomenon into consideration, the author asserts that the basic function of Japanese imperatives is to order the hearer to introduce the speaker's intention (or plan) into his/her knowledge of the real world. Two parameters are proposed which are relevant to the interpretation of the function of imperative sentences in Japanese. (1) It is (or is not) time to carry out the action at speech time.(time consideration/time non-consideration) (2) There is something (or nothing) that conflicts with the speaker's intention at speech time.
