The study of lexical history can be better handled When it is based on both philology and linguistic geography. For this, The Linguistic Atlas of Japan has been used as a primary source in linguistic geography. When examining lexical items presented in The Linguistic Atlas of Japan with those found in philology, some semantic differences can be noticed. For example, the lexical item mage means “eyelash” in philology, while it means “eyebrow” in linguistic geography. Therefore, it is necessary to view the distribution of semantically related items which are not found in The Linguistic Atlas of Japan, such as eyelash. In this research, 50 such semantically related items, mainly the names of body parts were chosen, and a nation-wide investigation was carried out. The data was collected from 1400 local points using postally distributed questionnaires.
