accent in the Tokyo dialect, word final accent, word length, accent change, accent change from accented to unaccented, A Dictionary of Tone-accent on Words in the Tokyo Dialect 1, 2
Through the quantitative analysis of a large amount of research data, this paper makes it clear that word length has been playing a relevant role in the process of accent change in the Tokyo dialect. Here, I concentrate upon the trend toward disappearance of the word-final accent in the accent pattern system of nouns. From the examination of the accent patterns of 832 different nouns (303 three-mora nouns, 428 four-mora nouns, and 101 five-mora nouns),I conclude that the longer words have undergone the change much further than the shorter ones, and that the change itself, with some variation due to differences among speakers or the features of words, obviously reflects the global transition of the noun accent patterns from accented to unaccented. The data were obtained from A Dictionary of Tone-accent on words in the Tokyo Dialect Ⅰ,Ⅱ.
