This analysis attempts to show the differences in conversational style between American and Japanese female conversation, based on data from four relaxed discussions participated in by three female native speakers. The paper examines the quality of the data and presents a quantitative analysis of data. The analysis of utterances with little propositional function shows a clear cultural tendency, with such utterances appearing the most frequently among Japanese, less among Japanese-Americans, and the least among Americans.
