The conceptual difference between “dialect” and “common language” is that the former is in principle concerned with the diversity of language, and the latter with its uniformity. The objective of this paper is to report, from the latter point of view, the interrelationship between the actual use of the regional common language in Hokkaido and the users' consciousness of language use. The data was obtained from the sociolinguistic survey conducted in Furano (a rural community) and Sapporo (a large city). A contrastive analysis between the two communities is also attempted with respect to the degree of “urbanization” of those communities.
