nasal allophone of /g/ in Japanese, consistent velar nasal speaker, inconsistent velar nasal speaker, speech style, language change, implicational scale, Sapporo city
In Sapporo city 332 random-sampled inhabitants were interviewed to investigate how many of them used the nasal allophone of /g/ in Japanese and in what conditions, linguistic and extra-linguistic, it actually appeared in their speech. In the present study I argue that the velar nasal speakers should be further subdivided into two groups, that is, the consistent velar nasal group and the inconsistent velar nasal one. I also propose a hypothesis that the distribution of the velar nasal consonant in the speech of the inconsistent velar nasal speakers can be best explained by implicational scaling of the linguistic factors involved.
